Costa Rica is known for its history of peace and its emphasis on education and environmental conservation. The phrase "Pura Vida" (pure life) captures the Costa Rican attitude.
 

Flying into the capital, San Jose is a challenge due to its location in a valley surrounded by volcanic ridges. Our pilot had a "misapproach" and had to circle and try again. 
 

 

The neo-classical National Theatre is considered the finest historical building in San Jose, with its statues, baroque vestibule and ceiling paintings.

Near San Jose's Plaza de Cultura are several museums such as the Gold Museum, the Jade Museum, the National Museum, the Children's Museum and the National Gallery of Contemporary Art.
 

San Jose's Central Park is the heart of the city where people gather for rallies, concerts and casual employment.

Iglesia de la Solidad is one of four pretty churches in the downtown, typical of the colonial architecture found throughout the city.
 

      San Jose has a vibrant Chinatown.

Children play among the statues of agricultural workers in front of the Central Bank.

The pedestrian-only Avenida Central was thronged with Saturday shoppers.

 

There are many statues throughout San Jose, including these tributes to Juan Santamaria, a large woman, and John Lennon.
